So, you know it’s beach week. It’s also our first anniversary on Sunday! Whoa. Time flies. You’ll be hearing about this first year, doncha worry.
First, though, I need to tell you about our anniversary plans! We THINK we’re going to go to this fabulous place, Salt, on the island where we’re staying, because I’m fully obsessed with it. We’ve been twice before, and every time it’s really incredible.
Salt is one of those great places that’s hard to review other than to say “its expensive but that’s ok and everything’s really fresh.” I mean, honestly. The menu changes a ton, so specific foods are hard to review, but this is a GOOD restaurant. Definitely a special occasion place for our budget, but well worth it every time we’ve been. The atmosphere is GREAT – you can make it kind of as casual or fancy as you’d like, depending on where you sit. There’s a massive bar with indoor and outdoor seating, and then quiet little tables throughout the restaurant.
We had cocktails there one night on our trip last year, and both bartenders that were there were fantastic: informative and really passionate about cool, different kinds of cocktails. That’s one of the trademarks we always look for in a great restaurant: do people seem to enjoy working there? Yes a thousand times, it seems at Salt.
To go with the fabulous cocktail and/or wine that you’ll be ordering, the oysters are the Salt claim to fame. You can order them individually, which we love because you get to try a few kinds AND you’re not stuck with a dozen or more. I like oysters, but usually am good with one or two. Jay could eat 49 all at once, but this isn’t really the place to go nuts on things that cost $3/piece. The servers are great about telling you about the different kinds of oysters, where they’re from, and how they’re slightly different from one another. The sizes are CRAZY, last year we had an oyster that was REALLY the size of my palm. No exaggeration.
As for the food, the dinner menu is almost totally different from the last time I was there, but there are a few things that stand out in my mind when I remember my last dinner there. First, I had gazpacho that was so good it inspired me to make my own. Really! I like gazpacho fine, but whatever was going on in Salt’s was really special, and it gave me a new love for the stuff.
Then, the pizzas. There are several different kinds that rotate on the menu, and last year we had a white pizza with clams and arugula that I’m still talking about. Like, every time someone asks me about Salt and how I like it, I’m all CLAM PIZZA NOM NOM NOM. Of course. Dear Salt: Can you please bring back clams on pizza just for this weekend? Please?
We also tried a few appetizers and a gnocchi dish, and, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, EVERYTHING WAS GOOD. I do like that about places like this, you can pretty much order whatever you like and it’ll be great.
So, in conclusion, go here. Simple! We’ll be there at least once, maybe twice in the coming days. Come join us!
