So, you might have noticed that things look a little bit different around here!
Last weekend I spent a boatload of time trying to figure out what good new theme I wanted to use on the site, THEN I spent an even more ridiculous amount of time trying to configure the damn thing so it didn’t look utterly ridiculous. Turns out, if you suck at web design that kind of takes awhile.
One of the things that took so effing long in the process was that I totally bought a theme, installed it, fought with it for several hours, and then HATED IT. It was an Elegant Theme, but one of the worst ever. Not elegant. It did weird things like leave a space for a featured photo even if I instructed it not to use a featured photo so there would be boxes that linked to posts with no images, and it didn’t have any support for issues. Of course it was only AFTER that nonsense that I did a little bit more reading and realized that, whoops, Elegant Themes is so janky that WordPress doesn’t even offer support for it anymore, AND they’re notorious for sucking at support from their actual site so….refund. Old blog theme back up. More research.
I’d read over and over again that the Genesis platform and Foodie theme were the best ever. Over and over again, which is of course why I refused to even entertain the idea of using it for a few days. BECAUSE BECAUSE not because I’m dumb, but because I was hesitant to use something super duper popular that might then make my blog look like tons of other sites. BUT, after the first theme fiasco I revisited the idea and looked at some other blogs that use the Foodie theme. What’s so GREAT about it is that it’s pretty easily customizeable and can look totally different from another blog with the same theme.
So, Foodie it was. I love it! I think. There are still a few things I’m playing with, but overall I think most of the new stuff is going really well. One thing that I think I really like is the recipe organizer, which is now live and open for business. It categorizes recipes automatically, which I think will make it easier for you to find things as long as I code everything properly when I write. Which will happen about half the time. The page is still a work in progress because basically I redid my organizational system and now have to go back and tag every single recipe properly so that it shows up in the right categories. SO. While I’m doing that I’m leaving up the old recipes page just in case, so use whichever one you like best! I think eventually that page will go away, so if you really love it better than the new one speak now! I’m still playing around with different ways to organize all the recipes – there are a lot! Tell me how best to do this.
Going back through all the recipes I’ve ever written has also made me just CRINGE at some of the early photography up in this place. It’s also made me realize that there are some good but OLD recipes on the site that might have forgotten, so I think as I work through this process I might go back and re-shoot some recipes, add better instructions, and bring some of my old favorites to the spotlight again. Sound good? Good.
Any other suh-weet food blog (or any kind of website!) feature that I’m missing out on? Thanks for bearing with me through this. I stink at websites.
