Last night I was sitting at the front desk in my yoga studio checking people in before the evening class. I was kind of sleepy like this picture of my dogs sleeping.
A woman who I didn’t know came up and signed her name, then asked if the could PLEASE OH PLEASE borrow a yoga towel for free because she’d forgotten hers and had no money and PLEASE OH PLEASE.
So I said yes. Because I’m nice and want to give things away for free that could get me fired by my bosses who will probably read this. Maybe not fired. It’s a $2 rental. Still. then, I typed her name in the computer, and shocker of all shockers, homegirl owed for two classes. So I told her that.
“Actually, it says here that you owe for two classes. Just, no worries, whenever.”
She looked me straight in the face and said “that’s impossible.” Love that. Her entire attitude changed and it got icy really fast. Also I started to sweat and my chest got blotchy, because now matter HOW hard I try it never ceases to amaze me when people just try to pretend like the world owes them something.
So we went over her account, and shocker of all shockers, the woman had purchased a 10-class pass which discounts classes but expires after a period of time. We’re pretty clear about this fact. Still, somehow people forget or don’t get it and we sometimes get asked to extend it, and often will do so if people are gracious. Instead, naturally, this woman informed me that THIS WOULD SIMPLY NOT WORK and she will be needing her classes reinstated because SHE PAID FOR THEM and that’s just the way it is.
Because any time you buy something or subscribe to something you just get it back for free if you go past the use-by date.
Anyway, I got all flustered and said I would ask the owner and then wanted to punch her in the face because, interestingly, I’m not great at giving people peaceful easy feelings for one hour in 100 degrees of heat right after being informed that my company’s policies are dumb. I don’t like it when people mess with my zen. And YES I KNOW that people can only drive you crazy if you give them the keys, but let’s all be honest and admit that sometimes shitty people just make you feel shitty and that’s ok too.
So I went and taught the entire class on being aware of what kind of energy you put out in the world and making choices to make it feel light and useful instead of hitting people like bricks. Smiling the whole time.
