Ok so I’m looking for a new bag.
And it’s, like, a totally specific need. And also I might need two bags. The thing is this. I have this Coach DIAPER BAG that I found at TJMaxx 7 years and 3 months ago for $250 or so and my mom got it for me for a college graduation present.
And then I proceeded to carry it every. single. day. for 7 years and 3 months to work and on planes and to events where I needed a big bag or places where I didn’t feel like swapping out purses and generally REALLY got Mama’s money’s worth.
And now The Coach is super dirty and ragged and stitching is ripping, and it’s just time.
I’m not into shopping. I’m into buying. The problem is all the bags I like are approximately nine million dollars and I’d love to spend $50 on a new tote but let’s be real will a cheap tote last 7 years? Probably not. And I’m not a bag switcher-outer. I like to have one big bag and one small bag and that is just what I use. Hence why I might need two bags.
So there are some criteria. First, I’d LOVE for this thing to be under $300, and I’m loving this camel color in that there picture. I got a black bag with camel trim, also from TJX, to try, but it turns out that the nylon fabric is so floppy and I think that at the very least I need a sturdy base on a bag, if not sturdy sides as well. At least one or two small pockets are a must, and straps long enough that I can carry the thing over my shoulder. Zip top would be great but not necessary. Leather would probably be ideal, though except for the flaccid issue I don’t hate the feel of nylon, I just think I want something a little bit more structured. For reference, it’s like a Longchamp bag but Michael Kors. Same kind of floppy idea, which I just don’t love.
Also. This will not be used as a diaper bag. There will certainly be baby things IN this bag at some point, but baby and I will have our own bags because she’ll be at daycare and I’ll be at work. Independent women and all that. Size-wise, I at the very least need to carry a clipboard foldy thing (this is probably called a portfolio in grown up language) and a tablet, phone, keys, and water bottle. So we’re talking big, like 17 inches wide at least. I also like the wide base look because of the aforementioned sturdy issue.
Please help me. There are SO. MANY. BAGS. and so many brands and I’m just all kinds of overwhelmed, not to mention that I really would love to buy one in a STORE because returning things from the internet is so annoying, but of course that also opens up a lot of doors. This one from madewell is particularly attractive to me – I wonder how slouchy it is in real life. I think it might be slightly too small though compared to what I have now. The price is exactly where I’d like it to be and the company is rad – does any one know if these stand up on their own like in the oft-misleading pictures? Please and thank you help a sister out. Also, relating to the zip-top, I like it for functionality but not always for the look. Thoughts on that?
Okayyyyy please tell me what to do. I’m totally fashion-challenged and am lost.
