Happy New Year!  I hope you’re on your way to recovery from the last few weeks.  They’ve been a doozie, at least for us!

The other day in yoga we talked about a book called The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz.  It’s a short book, simple to read, and incredibly profound in its simplicity.   Rather than make resolutions, I usually spend some time in January thinking about changes I’m ALWAYS trying to make – not just at this time of year when people are going to become perfect in 10 days and then forget all about it and end up feeling like failures.

I have no desire for that.  I do, however, have a desire for peace, joy, love, and contentment. This reading made great sense to me, and I hope you’ll find some comfort in it as well.

Macs are the worst computersoh MAN.

The year is over, folks!

I can’t believe it. Really.  What the heck?

I know I usually talk about food, and you know that if you’re needing motivation for what to cook over the next few days you can just head over to the recipes page, right?

I know you know that.  You’re an adult.

Instead of food, though, I thought it’d be nice if we talked about this year.  It’s been a doozie, and I don’t see 2013 calming down one bit.

One Last Gift Idea – Casseroles!

Freaking out yet?

Christmas is tomorrow!

I’m psyched.  Jay and I are driving the full 17 minutes and spending the night with my parents tonight.  It’s gonna be fun, and it’ll likely send my father to an early grave, because according to him, we drink too much.

According to him, I said.

I have a great gift idea that you can give to ANYONE tomorrow, or later this week if you spread out your events like some folks do.

You buy a dish.  You make a casserole in said dish.  Then you take the casserole to the person you’re giving the gift to. They can freeze it or refrigerate it, depending on the casserole and when they want to eat it, and keep the dish as the gift?

I would seriously love this gift.  I love baking dishes and I love eating.  Know anyone else like that?  This is perfect for them!

ARE YOU STILL OUT THERE?

You didn’t get whooshed up did you?

Are we all gone?

Nope?  I’m fine.  If you are too then I guess we’re good to go for the next little bit.

Phew – that was close.

In other news, how’s that Christmas shopping going?  I have two more gifts to get and then I’m onto wrapping.  PHEW.  It’s been a long time coming!  I love giving things to people.  I especially love giving homemade gifts that people can USE.  There’s never anything wrong with some chocolate and a great bottle of wine, but you can totally make some things to give away and really blow people away.  It’s almost ALWAYS cheaper to make your own gifts too, so hurray for frugalitay!

Homemade Chow Chow

Serve from a cute jarDo you know what chow chow is?

It’s cabbage.  Pickled.  It’s like relish, kind of.

But not dill relish.  Or sweet pickle relish.  It’s different.

It’s a southern thing, I think.  Anyone have knowledge of Chow Chow History?  That should be a class.

Chow chow is also the only way I would eat any sort of greens for the first ten years of my life.  I’m a sucker for anything vinegary, and it took a few more years for me to be a sucker for greens like I am now.

This stuff is so simple to make, and really delicious.  You can can it for realzies like we did the other day, but it lasts in the fridge for weeks without any sort of formal preservation method.  I promise.  You’ll love it!

Easy Baked Ziti

Serve with saladI KNOW.

You’re wondering what to do with all that delicious marinara we made yesterday, aren’t you?

Here it is, kids.

You could make ziti!  You could make a gazillion other things too, of course, but this is a GREAT one.  My version is vegetarian, and has FIVE ingredients if you have premade sauce on hand.  Also, three of the ingredients are cheese.

So…..it’s kind of foolproof.  Seriously.

This is great for this time of year because you can make one, cover it, keep it in the fridge for days or the freezer for months, then just bake it when you want to eat it!  You can also make it first thing in the morning and bake it when you’re ready for dinner….you get the picture.  It’s total make-ahead food.

Christmas Gifts for All – Do Your Own Canning!

Carefully fill jarsWelp, I’ve officially started to care more about my blog than my loved ones.

In that, I’m telling the world what they’re getting for Christmas.

I learned this trick from my mother.  When I turned 6 months old and became super duper picky about clothes (I don’t care about them, I just don’t want to wear what I don’t want to wear.  It’s tough.), she started shopping for me and my sisters each fall and having us try on tons and tons of things that we might like.  Then, she returned everything that didn’t work and wrapped everything else, with strict instructions for us to act surprised on Christmas.

This didn’t really happen when I was an infant – but for several years, this has been our MO for gift-giving.  It works great, for me at least.  I get to “shop” a few months before Christmas, which is fun, and then I get to have new stuff paid for by my dear parents, which is kind of the only way I can ever get new clothes because I spend all my money on boxed wine.

Aren’t you glad you know this?  It’s very important to this post.

Not really.

Matchy Matchy Red and Green Food

14 Friday Dec 2012

Happy Friday!

Fridays are just so wonderful and hopeful, don’t you think?  I have lots of fun plans this weekend, and I’m itching for them to start!

I also ordered something online that turned out to not be in stock, so that’s kind of a bummer.

What I’m saying is, I’m super emotionally conflicted right now.

I love Christmas decorations.  Everything’s so pretty this time of year, and using silly Christmas serving pieces at parties totally makes my life better.

So, I thought we could wrap up this week by talking about some super cute and dorky ways to make some delicious foods red and green, so that everything in the world can be Christmasy just for a little bit longer.  Let’s do it!

Serve with simple saladWhat are you making for Christmas dinner?

I’m making this.

Bigger.

The thing about great holiday meals is that we put them on this pedestal and then don’t make them ALL YEAR LONG and then we miss them.  But, frankly, some traditional holiday meals are kind of complicated and time consuming and contain expensive ingredients, so it makes sense to only eat them once a year.

Unless.

Unless, you figured out how to simplify the process so that you could enjoy fabulous wonderful fancy flavors year round without an excessive amount of work.

Gift Idea! Cupcakes in a Jar

Put cute jar in bagWelp.

The time has come.

For me, “the time” means that I’m realizing how many people are in my life I love so much, and how I want to give them all fabulous gifts, and how having 4 jobs that I love mostly means that I’m embarrassingly poor but really quite happy so I’d better get on making some homemade gifts asap so I don’t lose my house.

THE TIME HAS COME TO MAKE OUR OWN CHRISTMAS GIFTS!

It’s more fun, too.

I found this little project on Pinterest, where I regularly spend hours looking at craft projects that I’ll never do.  It’s not that I can’t craft…it’s just that I hurry too much and things end up looking sloppier than the perfect pictures you see on the interwebz.
