Restaurant Review

Restaurant Review – Husk

September 15, 2015 by funnyloveblog Leave a Comment

Approximately one million years ago Jay and I went to Husk in Charleston on our anniversary.  It feels SO long ago because it was on vacation, in the middle of summer, I was only 21 weeks pregnant, and Jay had broken his leg 10 days prior.  11855688_10100615712469253_1785848647863511158_n

So, in grown up time it was only 6 weeks ago, but a lot has happened since then, know what I mean?  Feels like a lifetime ago.

Jay had actually picked the restaurant for our anniversary months prior after watching Sean Brock the owner of Husk on Mind of a Chef, which is made by PBS but is on Netflix and you should totally watch every single episode right this very instant.  We’d seen a few of Husk’s dishes featured on the show, and we’re total celeb chef junkies, so it was a no-brainer for the fanciest dinner of our year.  Sadly, Sean Brock wasn’t there to fawn over the unfamous crippled bloggers gracing his restaurant with their presence.  The nerve.

Mussels and Chorizo in White Wine

June 8, 2015 by funnyloveblog Leave a Comment

Remember when I used to write restaurant reviews?  I barely do, either.  I don’t know why we stopped, we just….did.  I like recipes and stories better, but sometimes I miss the days of photographing food and talking to people online about the experiences we had.  BUT, out of all those reviews we wrote back in the early days of the blog, we never photographed anything at or wrote about my favorite restaurant in Greenville, The Lazy Goat.  Lazy Goat is part of a restaurant group called Table 301, and we actually love most of their restaurants.  This, though, is Spanish Tapas AND the head chef is a woman AND I honestly can say that in years and years in Greenville and tons of trips to Lazy Goat, we’ve never had ANYTHING we don’t like.  So, there’s your review.IMG_6614

Our absolute favorite dish at Lazy Goat is mussels with chorizo.  Theirs comes in some kind of a sexy almost-but-not-quite creamy broth with cured chorizo and a parmesan crisp that gets all soaked in the broth.  The dish comes with charred bread for dipping and we ALWAYS order more because the broth is THAT good, and the salty chorizo is just incredible.  A bottle of wine for 2 plus the Goat’s mussels is the best happy hour this city has to offer, IMO, and if you go on a Thursday bottles of wine are half off.

BUT THAT ISN’T WHAT THIS IS ABOUT.  Since we can’t always be rushing out to fancy happy hours on a Thursday, it’s really nice (and, duh, cheaper) to be able to make your own fav apps at home, amirite?  This, to me, is the perfect community appetizer.  You can prep the ingredients well in advance, then just add the mussels and steam them right in the broth 15 minutes before you’d like to serve.  Then you serve right out of the pot with glasses of chilled wine and blackened bread (maybe on the grill?) and everyone just goes for it.  Emphasis on fighting for the broth, you really don’t want to miss out on that part.

Last Weekend’s Asheville Food Roundup

October 1, 2014 by funnyloveblog Leave a Comment

When we went to Asheville last weekend to visit our friends Katie and Tony for Jay’s 5K (that’s a lot of information), we had all these great intentions of making food at their house, not eating or spending too much, you know.  Best laid plans.

UNTIL WE REALIZED WE WERE IN ASHEVILLE, home of some of our very favorite restaurants, and so we said eff it and went to 4 restaurants in 2 days.  Whatever.

Restaurant Review: Salt at Station 22

August 5, 2014 by funnyloveblog Leave a Comment

So, you know it’s beach week.  It’s also our first anniversary on Sunday!  Whoa.  Time flies.  You’ll be hearing about this first year, doncha worry.  IMG_5642

First, though, I need to tell you about our anniversary plans!  We THINK we’re going to go to this fabulous place, Salt, on the island where we’re staying, because I’m fully obsessed with it.  We’ve been twice before, and every time it’s really incredible.

So We Went to NYC {Sunday}

April 30, 2014 by funnyloveblog 2 Comments

You know that, because you followed along on Instagram and you saw what a GREAT time we had!

Guys, we seriously think that this weekend was one of the best of our lives.  Nothing major happened, but we felt like we had room to BREATHE, and we didn’t make too many plans, and we kind of just … roamed the city for two days after the show on Saturday night, which was epic of all epic.

Saturday night was the whole reason we were there, obv.  I work for a company called Varsity Vocals, and our Finals was on Saturday at The Town Hall Theatre.  Love that place.  The show was GREAT, the kids were GREAT, and the afterparty involved me drinking all the vodka until FOUR AM because apparently time stands still in NYC.  It was really wonderful, and is always one of my favorite times of year.
