It’s been a while since we’ve had some Japanese food, hasn’t it?

This is kind of weird – it’s totally delicious, but not something you see in the US so….sorry about that.  Branch out.  It’s song-of-my-people type of stuff, because I like to think that I’m Japanese, so you just have to deal with it. Greens with hashi and rice

Also, it’s healthy and yummy so…you can be Japanese too!

My mom used to make this all the time when we lived in Tokyo, and it was a nice kid dish – salty and included fried tofu but made with a whole head of greens.  I loved it, and I still do.  If you leave out the dashi this is vegan, too – otherwise it’s a lovely vegetarian dish that kind of can be a meal.

Oh, and.  5 ingredients.  Massive flavor.

Salad with hashiGuysImadeyousalad.

You know how at sushi restaurants sometimes they have Crab Salad rolls but really it’s just fake crab mixed with mayo?

And sometimes there are Spicy Crab rolls that really are just fake crab mixed with mayo and spicy stuff?

Welp, I have a confession.  I love crab salad.  And spicy crab salad.  And when either of those things are made into a sushi roll?  I’m a seriously happy human being.

So, you know sometimes my family makes homemade sushi on weekends.  You can click here if you missed that one.  It’s super fun, light, and delicious, and you can make whatever components of sushi that you really like to customize the meal to your preferences!

Tuna Tataki

Kids.

Have you ever had tuna tataki?  Or beef tataki?

It’s like, totes delicious.  It’s seared meat or fish in tangy soy sauce!  What’s not to like?

There’s chili oil too. Also wonderful.

Tataki is a staple in many Japanese restaurants, and I see it a lot as a salad or appetizer option.  That’s how we served it the last time we made sushi at home – as a side to accompany all the other yumminess.

I think, though, that this would be SO FREAKING GREAT as a meal with some plain white rice – why the heck not?  So simple and wonderful….you just can’t beat it.

The way I make it is annoyingly simple too, so try to keep up.

We haven’t had any Japanese food in, like, totes a long time, have we?

Sorry about that.

I cook it all the time, and I don’t tell you about it.

That’s on me.

This is a new one, though!  I made this last week when we celebrated my dad’s birthday – he hems and haws every year about what to have, and then invariably requests homemade sushi, which suits everyone just fine.

This year, I added this salad, which was DANG good.  It was easy too, and you’ll want to add it to your roster of Asian Things To Try (hehe) asap.

You’ve seen this.

I’m sorry for being lame.

I can’t help it, though.  The Pinteresters love it!

Each day I’m really surprised at how many of you are digging this non-recipe, so I wanted to post it again in case you haven’t tried it yet.

I make it all the time, and the killer, for me, is the BURNED SOY SAUCE TASTE.

That’s right.  It’s right up there with burned cheese, in my book.

Happy Friday!

We are addressing 2,000 envelopes and preparing to move offices at work today.

So, we’re bored, is what I’m trying to say.

Remember when we made those mushrooms a few days ago and talked about how nice it is to make restaurant-ish food at home?

Well, this is another great idea for a steakhouse-style meal – but with tofu instead of steak!

I like that.

Also, there are four ingredients. FOUR.  You’re welcome.

It’s delicious.  Here we go!

Tonight is probably a good night to make a crap ton of rice and fry it, don’t you think?

Here’s how I do it when I make mine!

You can use anything you need to get rid of, and it’s so delicious!

One time, I go a little nuts and made an Italian version with spinach, crumbled cooked sausage, and fresh chopped tomatoes.

WHOA.  That was good.

An Asian-style is lovely too, though, and can be altered any way you like!

It’s good, is what I’m saying.

What’s your favorite fried rice ingredient?

4-Ingredient Sesame Crusted Fish

FOUR INGREDIENTS!

That’s better than the Food Network Show Five Ingredient Fix.

Because, you know, this is only 4 ingredients.

You know that I love Asian food, but some of the things I make are a leeetle bit on the weird side, or they have hard-to-find ingredients, which is a bummer.

This is not one of those recipes.

This is sesame-crusted fish!

This has 4 ingredients!

This has no measurements!

This is GREAT.

So, I grew up in Tokyo.  You knew that.  Now, I just cook lots of Japanese food and pretend to be Asian.  It’s fun and weird and I’m ok with it.

Ignore me.

This is in an 8 way tie for my favorite way to eat tofu.  When I got my tonsils out and was miserable and sad and achy it was one of the first things I ate!  The flavors are MAGICAL, and what a great freakin way to get some low-calorie and low-fat protein?

This is easy and fun and SO delicious!  Don’t be scared.  Try it soon!
