Plate surrounded with veggiesI hope you’re having a lovely weekend!

I’m on the way to Duke for a show in the snow, which rhymes but also means that a lot of different things could go wrong.

Oh well.

Anyway, my valentine would like me to remind you of this recipe, cornish game hens with roasted veggies.

Valentine ready to eat

It’s delicious, and you’ll totally love it if you haven’t tried it yet.  It’s great for the weekend, too!

Roast until skin is crispy

Got any fun plans this weekend?

OMG.

Why can’t Valentine’s day be floating?  Like…always the second Saturday of February?  Thursday is a super bummer day for a holiday.  It’s SO CLOSE to the weekend.  But….not quite.

Even so, you might want to make something super delicious yet fast and affordable for the people you love tonight, right?

Enter…..pasta.

It’s just so easy.  And delicious.  And everyone likes it.

Unless they’re dumb, and then you don’t need to be hanging out with them.

Anyway.

If fish with parmesan crust and dill isn’t your thing, and you thought my cornish game hen “lovebirds” were dumb, I totally get it.

Some people need meat on fancy occasions.  It’s ok.

I’m not mad that you think the other stuff I tell you to cook is lame.

Last year about this time I made some steak with blue cheese sauce.

Then, I told you to make it for Valentine’s day, along with several other suggestions.

It was the most popular Valentine’s idea of 2012.

I’m not feeling like we should reinvent the wheel, are you?  I can reinvent it another day.

Today, though, let’s talk steak.

Plate surrounded with veggiesIt’s 6 days until Valentine’s Day!

I made you dinner.

It’s cute, easy, delicious, and you’ll love it.

Promise!

My valentine did, at least.  We went ahead and celebrated a few days ago so you could have a great idea for what to cook next weekend!

You’re welcome for that.

Also, I think we’ll be busy next Thursday, but we really did this for you.

Here’s what we’re working with:  Game hens, rubbed with butter and roasted over fennel, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, and white wine.  With rosemary and orange zest.  Then we get even sexier with orange/butter sauce made with the drippings.  Fresh parsley and aged parm add even more flavor, and then you die of happiness.

I KNOW.

It was super easy, too!  You’ve really gotta try it.

You know what next week is?

It’s a day where we buy things for people we love, and single people pretend like having a significant other is the only way to feel love, which makes me feel sad, but I kind of get it because of all the commercials, and people eat food together.

That’s what your Valentine’s day looks like, right?

Mine actually started last night.  I cooked something yummy for you!  I’m gonna show it to you soon so you can plan to make it for your sweetie, or your mom, or your dog, or your friends.  Love can come from lots of places, people!

I think cooking on Valentine’s day is so fun.  First, you save money and irritation and time by avoiding restaurants.  Plus, it’s a nice gesture for people you love.  Plus, you can drink and not drive.

Everyone wins!

I don’t usually talk about nudity, sex, or anything like that.  I find it weird and easier to make That’s What She Said comments that are funny but don’t involve disclosure about my personal life.

However….

Look, I know you’re not all in relationships, or you have kids and believe that you have to be young and childless to celebrate Valentine’s Day, or whatever other excuse you have for hating this particular holiday.

That’s fine!

I, however, think it’s a great time to celebrate anyone you love, and I celebrate people I love with food.

I also celebrate weekends, Mondays, deaths, births, raises, housecleaning, and adult acne with food.

But, I’m weird like that.

Anyway.

Holy MOLY was this good.

This is definitely, by far, the thing you should be making tonight for dinner.  Or tomorrow.

Or for Valentine’s Day.

It’s REALLY good.

My super outdoorsy friend Weston goes on fishing trips in Alaska, and he brought over some halibut for us to cook earlier this week.  The parmesan and dill preparation was something he’d had in Alaska at a restaurant, so he described it to me and this is what I came up with.

It was SO good and easy!

Roasted Carrots

As we determined this morning when we made steak with blue cheese sauce, this is a very perfect week for fun, fancy food.

But, I maintain that the food doesn’t have to be complicated!

This side dish is DELICIOUS and only has 4 ingredients.  If you don’t like cooked carrots, try them again!  These aren’t sugary and mushy.  They’re tender, firm on the outside, and intensely flavorful from the salt and dill.

Just try them once, and if you don’t like them don’t make them again.

But you’ll like them!

Easy, Elegant, and Garlic Free – Valentine’s Dinner Suggestion!

As we discussed earlier today, I’m missing meat just a wee bit.  I’m loving all the fish and tofu and cheese that we’re eating, but there’s just something about a steak that’s SO good, huh?

This was the last meat-inclusive meal Jay and I ate before we gave up meat for a month starting two weeks ago.  It was fabulous and SO easy, and I’d highly recommend that you consider making this next week for anyone you consider nice enough to be your Valentine.  Why not your mom?  She birthed you, so she probably deserves it.
